Ask ten surfers whether they prefer wax or a traction pad and you'll get a fair few strong opinions. Both give your back foot something to bite into, but they suit different boards, different water temps and different surfers. Here's how to choose before the spring swells fill in.
How Wax Works (and Where It Falls Short)
Wax is cheap, easy to find and works on the whole deck, which is why it's still the default for most longboarders and shortboarders alike. The catch is temperature. Spring water sits in that awkward middle zone, so a bar that grips beautifully at dawn can turn greasy by lunch. Keep a cooler and a warmer bar in the car, like the Sticky Bumps Surf Wax 4-Pack, and match the bar to the water on the day.
Wax also needs upkeep. Once it's lumpy and grey with sand, scrape it back with the Wax Comb with Fin Key and lay down a fresh base coat. Skip that step and you'll feel your feet sliding on the first bottom turn.
Why Traction Pads Make Sense
A tail pad gives you a fixed, grippy spot for your back foot every single wave. That's a big help on shortboards and fishes, where precise foot placement matters in steep, quick turns. It also lets you feel the tail kick under your heel, which makes it easier to pivot and drive off the back foot. A pad such as the FCS T-3 Eco Traction Pad won't melt, won't need scraping and lasts for seasons, so the upfront cost pays itself back.
The trade-off is flexibility. A pad locks you into one back foot position, which some surfers find limiting on bigger or more playful boards. If you walk the board a lot, wax across the whole deck is the better call.
So Which One Should You Use?
Here's a quick rule of thumb. Shortboard, fish or hybrid that you throw around: go with a pad on the tail and a patch of wax up front for your front foot. Longboard or mid-length where you cross-step: stick with full-deck wax. And if you surf in all sorts of conditions through spring, a pad plus a fresh coat of the right wax covers most situations.
Look After the Rest of Your Kit
Grip is only one part of a good session. Check your cord and cuff while you're at it, because a worn leash will let you down at the worst moment. The FCS All Round Classic Leash 6ft is a reliable upgrade. After the surf, rinse off with the Beach Soul Portable Shower 8L, get changed on a Boardsox Surf Change Mat, and hang your suit on an Ocean Earth Premium Wetsuit Hanger so it's dry for the next session.
